“Born Of A Legend”
Lower Sioux
Bronze Monument By Snell Johnson
Monument built to honor the people of the Lower Sioux Tribe.
The hunter astride his horse pursuing the buffalo depicts their horsemanship, courage and ingenuity. The hunting of the buffalo provided not only food for the tribe but, the hide was used for clothing and Tee Pees. The horns were used for handles on tools and the bones used for needles. The buffalo was sacred and very important to the tribes’ survival.
The man, woman and baby below the rocks symbolizes the family unit and the love and caring of each other; this, is the real heart of the monument….the real heart of the people.
Snell Johnson quoted, “As an artist, I have a deep seated desire to make sure this world never again disrespect or forgets the great sacrifice made by these people. This monument is symbolic of the great heart of the Lower Sioux. It also symbolizes the way of life that brought this people to this position in life. As this monument is dedicated, it is my hope that what we have accomplished together here will always bind us together as friends.”
